008: furniture classics and their less known alternatives
The indie Togo and a substitute for the Wassily chair
My favorite lazy weekend past time is to needlepoint while watching AD house tours. Closely followed by combing Facebook Marketplace in search of an elusive furniture score. For today, we’re exploring some furniture classics and great indie or lesser known alternatives.
If you like the Togo sofa…
…you’re going to LOVE Uma Objects’ collaboration with Holloway Li which has single, double, and corner sofa formations. The T4, as it’s called, comes in a variety of colors and has the same bubbly Togo shape but draws from Uma’s experience in the transportation industry.
If you like Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chair …
…then you probably went to art school. Try Le Corbusier’s LC1 in pony hide which is just as acclaimed. Both chairs come from the minds of architects and were designed within a few years of each other (1925 and 1928 respectively). You’ll have to hunt them down vintage unless you opt for a reproduction.
If you like RH’s cloud couch…
…save the money and choose Six Penny’s Neva Sectional - which comes in several colors including this cozy blush. I have a Six Penny Sofa and can attest to its cloud-like properties and record fast shipping (you can check out more of my apartment in 004: How I decorated my apartment).
If you like acrylic waterfall coffee tables…
…try a glass tabletop with a colored base. I fell in love with these glass and resin coffee tables from Studio Mignone, ever since I saw Alyssa Coscarelli’s LA home in Domino Magazine. The base can be made in any combination of colors.
If you like checkered area rugs…
…try something with more texture from Harem Modern who imports beautiful one-of-one rugs from Morocco. The only caveat is that a true Moroccan rug will jam your vacuum.
If you like this viral duvet from Gata…
…check out the duvets and quilts from Society of Wanderers’ Australian designed French linen. I discovered these from Elsa Hosk’s AD tour back in 2020. If it’s not obvious, I’m very into blush as a primary home color.
If you like Ettore Sottsass’ floor mirror…
…Gustaf Westman’s chunky mirror is equally as instagrammable and no electricity required!
If you like Bien Mal’s throw blankets…
…Olivia Wendel’s animal inspired throws, especially this swan blanket! I love my zebra one.
If you like vintage Italian mushroom lamps…
…the Panthella table lamp from Louis Poulsen, a Danish design and architectural house. Same mushroom shape but provides more focused light.
Say hi & share with a friend <3
YES LOVE! We need to think about the crisis of the collapsing trend cycle even more critically in interior design - and if we buy the “thing” that’s over saturated and trendy, it’s even more likely we’ll want to replace it in record time. Figuring out individual, thoughtful, creative ways to design your home is important and FUN! These are amazing picks!!
